The Board of Directors has approved changes to the Rulebook.
Why are the Rules changing?
- We seek to constantly improve the rulebook so that it’s easy to remember and follow.
- Our Range Safety Officers makes recommendations based on the behaviours they see on the range.
- We need to respond to changing circumstances, such as changes to time zone laws.
When do the changes come into force?
The rules are in effect now. The Range Safety Officer team will focus on coaching and educating members in 2026,

Rule #
Old
New
Rationale
1
Ranges open at 09:00 or “sunrise” (whichever is later) and close at 20:00 or “sunset” (whichever is earlier.) No firearms may be discharged outside these times. The authoritative rise/set times are on the website’s home page
This future-proofs us from time zone changes.
6
Members shall maintain necessary competence to operate their equipment safely
This rule had three different rules which were redundant with other rules. The PPE part of this rule is better placed in the RO workflow (See new Rule 15.2.4)
15.1
(new)
Shooters arriving at an occupied range must identify the RO and confirm the current range command before handling uncased firearms
We need to improve our firing line management to comply with the spirit of the Range Officer federal regulations. |
15.2.4
(new)
Every person on the range shall wear hearing protection and protective eyewear while the range is HOT/ACTIVE
Moved from #6 because this fits the RO workflow better
21.4
I
Shooters participating in a dynamic course of fire shall be certified in a recognized dynamic discipline (such as IPSC) and the RO shall manage the firing line according to the rules of that discipline
This provides necessary clarity that a holster card alone does not qualify for dynamic shooting (moving with loaded firearm while firing)
Specific Range G Procedures
Repealed
With the streamlining of range rules last year (by range type) these rules are redundant
76
The range is closed when the “Personnel Downrange” sign is displayed and lock-outs are placed on the overhead doors. This may be due to unplanned maintenance on the range or nearby well pads. This overrides any booking.
Updated to accommodate subcommittee LOTO rule
82.2
(new)
Non-members registered in an event may obtain a camping permit where the event organizers provide an on-site Camping Supervisor
Guest camping only permitted when an event organizer provides an onsite supervisor.
